Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta set the tone with his opening statement at the team’s pre-draft news conference Wednesday.

“The offseason has had its set of challenges in different ways, but we’re excited about where we are as a team,” DeCosta said.

DeCosta didn’t identify what the specific “challenges” were that he was alluding to, but anybody who even has a passing interest in the Ravens, or just the NFL for that matter, surely understood what he meant. The organization’s ongoing contract stalemate with star quarterback Lamar Jackson has been one of the biggest stories in the league this offseason.

It also has significantly impacted the Ravens, who have had to watch their spending so they could be in position to match a potential Jackson offer sheet from another team, if one comes.

Ravens decision-makers, though, made clear that Wednesday was not the time to talk about Jackson, the trade request he recently made public or his standing with the organization. A week after head coach John Harbaugh was peppered with inquiries about his disgruntled quarterback during the AFC coaches’ media availability at the owners’ meetings in Phoenix, DeCosta declined to answer a question Wednesday about whether he’s spoken to Jackson. baltimore ravens crocs
