The land of purple orchids will host “The White Lotus” as HBO has chosen Thailand as the setting for the 3rd season of its hit series. A black comedy set in luxury resorts, the producer of the series recently visited the Kingdom to scope out locations, according to Variety and other entertainment industry publications.
“The 1st season kind of highlighted money, and then the 2nd season is intimacy. I think the 3rd season would be maybe a satirical look at death and Eastern spirituality,” said Mike White, who produces, writes and directs the limited series. “It feels like it could be a rich tapestry to do another round at White Lotus,” he added.
It would not be the first time Thailand has been the setting for a Western comedy, film or television series. The Kingdom has long been a favorite for Hollywood moviemakers looking for exotic locations along with strong local technical talent, good logistics and ease of production. Among the scores of films, some award winners, shot in Thailand have been The Hangover Part II, The Beach, The Man with the Golden Gun, Lost in Thailand, the Ugly American, the Deer Hunter, Bridget Jones: the Edge of Reason, and Star Wars Episode III.
Among the locations White toured to determine the next setting for the series were Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, and the Golden Triangle, the northern region where the borders of Thailand, Lao PDR and Myanmar converge along the Mekong River. In its Season 1, The White Lotus won 10 Emmy awards, including those for outstanding limited or anthology series and supporting actress for Jennifer Coolidge. Earlier this year, Coolidge won a Golden Globe for Season 2, which also took home best limited series, anthology series or television motion picture. The series also won two Screen Actors Guild awards, for best TV drama ensemble and for Coolidge’s performance.
