While this year’s Oscars ceremony seemed to go off without a hitch, things were quite literally up in the air for host Jimmy Kimmel until the very last moment. In an interview with Variety, Jimmy Kimmel Live! executive producer and Oscar writer Molly McNearney—who’s also married to Kimmel—shared several behind-the-scenes tidbits about the show’s opening monologue, including the genesis of Andrew Garfield’s now famous grimace.
During the monologue, Kimmel joked that he had assembled a slap-proof “security team” comprised of Michael B. Jordan, Pedro Pascal, Michelle Yeoh, Steven Spielberg, and Andrew Garfield. According to McNearney, she personally informed all five stars that they’d be on camera for the bit.
“We told them minutes before the show started, ‘You’re going to be on camera, Jimmy’s going to refer to you as part of his security team. If you could just show some kind of physical support or give him a fist bump,’” she said. Everyone was “game and they were very supportive,” said McNearney, who made a specially requested that Garfield do a Spider-Man web-sling gesture. Garfield, though, opted against that. “He made his own choice. Which I think was even better,” she said. neon genesis garfield
